MEET CHRISTIE
Hello! My name is Christie Cairo and I have served Southeast Michigan’s fitness industry for over 23 years. Since 1997, I have worked as a personal trainer while helping implement the first personal training program at Bally Total Fitness for 14 years.
I tried yoga around 2003 and absolutely hated it. I thought it was boring and would rather go "burn some calories" another way. I thought yoga was about getting the nice yoga butt.
I was talked into trying a more challenging style of yoga a few months later that involved focus on breath and movement with periods of active and passive stretching. It certainly helped me stretch and strengthen my body in a way no other exercise could. I was fortunate to have found yoga teachers who explained things like philosophy, anatomy and the science of how tools like mantras and meditations work. This became food for my soul. I fell in love with the breath, body, and mind connection that evolves from an authentic yoga lineage/practice.
In 2007, I completed a 200 RYT under Michael Johnson, founder of Clearlight Yoga. I have continued to remain a student of many wise and gifted teachers. Since then, I have been involved at various Wellness and Fitness Centers, Yoga Studios, Retreat Centers and both Private and Corporate Yoga. I have taught thousands of yoga classes (becoming an E-RYT 200) and have recently enjoyed the role as Director of a 200 Hour Yoga Alliance Program for the past 9 years. This role also allows me to facilitate Continuing Education courses for the Yoga Alliance Certified Teacher. I completed my RYT 300 in February 2020.
It is my intention to share the tools of yoga that have helped me during the "ups and down" of my own life. I have most importantly realized that being “balanced” and “flexible” was not about touching my toes.
It was about finding balance and flexibility in my own life as it is.
As Dr. Joe Dispenza says, “You are who you practice to be”.
I hope to create a space where you find moments of connection, compassion and community from home .
I am playful.
I laugh a lot.
Sometimes I have a potty mouth.
My intention is good.
Shanti! Shanti! Shanti!
Peace! Peace! Peace!

BEYOND THE STUDIO SETTING
I really love teaching yoga. I can't imagine my life without it.
The 2020 Pandemic and the Michigan order to close and restrict the openings of yoga studios has greatly influenced our means of staying in touch with each other. Even before the pandemic, life gets very busy with details like our jobs, traffic, kids, chores, grocery shopping etc. These are among the many reasons we don't attend a class. Although we may be separated physically, we can conveniently stay connected to each other online. Staying connected as a virtual community is so important in times of stress, separateness, fear and anxiety. It takes courage and discipline to stay focused and positive. We can do this together. The web has made the possibility of learning so much more accessible with teachers and people we may never have had access to in the past. This Connection can be used as a gift to learn and grow in ways we may not have ever imagined. We can do this together. |
I will be using social media and live stream to stay connected as a yoga teacher. The Christie Cairo Project is a virtual community focused on Connection, Compassion and Community.
I have invested into equipment such as a custom-made 4k/HD Streaming Computer, 4k Bridge Camera and a 55 inch computer screen. Having a big screen as a monitor will allow a "virtual classroom" experience for me to easily see many students of our community during the yoga practice through the Zoom application and other forms of social media. This will allow for a more "personable feel" so I can see student's form and possibly help verbally assist alignment. There will also be time periods of "hanging out" prior or after class for simply saying "hi" or questions regarding class.
Can you imagine if we used the internet connection wisely to strengthen and transform our tight bodies (and minds) instead of feeding it one more conversation, meme, article or TV program regarding fear, anger, vanity, and disconnection with ourselves and each other?
CONNECTION, COMPASSION, COMMUNITY is always Essential!
